Help me or shoot me.

Yo, people.

For too long have I been wanting to make a game, but there've always been snags. I'm a programmer at heart so I was easily able to iron out complications on the programming side. I've got a GUI system worked out that I'd like & I've set up an "engine" for loading and animating models.

... but the models are snags #2 and #3.

I've managed to overcome my serious lack of patience to model what I'd like to think is a pretty impressive mage (considering it's my 2nd model). I don't want my game to have awesome graphics so it's at a standard I'm happy with. The problem is now with the texturing - and I know I'll have this texturing problem for all other models.

See attachment for screenshots of current mage (flat, smooth & half-arse textured).

I've read a few tutorials on making cloth in Photoshop, but they're beyond me. I've had a go at it with moderate yet sub-par success. So... my question is: what can I do to overcome my little problem, without taking a 3 year course in graphics?

I suppose I could get someone else to texture them, but I don't think they'll look the way I imagine them when they're done. O' the choices to make!

All input will be appreciated.

[edit]

Final Fantasy 9 quality graphics/textures is what I'm aiming at. Even though they're of really poor quality, they have all the base details in there. I suppose I'd benefit a lot from learning techniques for that alone as I can probably piece the rest together myself.
