Locked background

Hey all,

Basically, i am working on a little image and i want to put another little image on top of mine. The only problem is for some reason, its saying both the images are locked, so i cant move the image i want on to mine. This has only started happening today and i dont understand why, i havnt changed any settings or anything. Its not just images i download either, every image i make is locked and i cant move it!

Any help would be great, thanks in advance,

p.s, if this isnt clear, just say and i will try to make it more understandable .. maybe even with a pic!!!

Let's see - I'm not completely sure I understand your question, but I'll post a few potential ideas on what might be the issue. Let me know if any of this helps.

By default the first layer, or background, is always locked (at least in Photoshop CS and previous, which is what I have). You can convert the background layer into a regular layer by double clicking on it - a prompt will come up allowing you to name the layer and make a few other settings. Press OK and the layer will then be fully editable.

There is also the ability to lock layers from editing in Photoshop... you should be able to toggle the lock on and off using the lock icon in the layers palette.

Another potential barrier to moving one image onto another can be color modes. If the image you're moving the other image onto is in Indexed Color mode (e.g. .gif files) then you can't move other images into that file. Just change the image to RGB to overcome this.

Anyhow - not sure if any of these ideas will help with your issue. If not, please post a screenshot of Photoshop's layers palette and any other info and I'll try to help.

You can also try copying the layer via create new layer and that should give you an unlocked copy of that layer. (yikes, that sounds confusing) Just drag that layer to the new layer button and it should make a new layer with the same image on it. Delete the locked layer and you should be able to fiddle around with it.

That is of course if any of the above options didn't work!
