Mask Question

I am working on a presentation in flash. I am trying to transition the images by using creative masks. I am using a series of thumbnails to allow the user to control the presentation. (They click on the thumbnail to view that image.) When the new image is loading, an animated mask is revealing the image in a creative way.
Problem/Challenge: I want the present image to transition into the newly selected image, with the mask revealing it. I dont think it can be a simple timeline presentation, Am I mistaken?

Image 1 is loaded. Random thumbnail is selected. Animated mask transitions image 1 into the new image. then the next thumbnail is selected, and so on. The presentation has to know what the present image is in order to transition properly? I have a limited knowlege about masks.

I hope its not to confusing....
