Like I said, I'm open to discussing it with staff/you guys (I was a bit too brief last night - was late and I wanted to post the news, since the server has already been canceled and though they "say" it will stay online until next week, I don't count on it).

It could be that my understanding of the security implications of running IRC on our primary server are not correct (I'm paying a professional to come in and harden security on the new server, and don't want to open the door right back up - my thought was to re-add a dedicated IRC/other server at a later date when the time came, keeping the primary server secure). However, security is an issue since I am condensing down to just the single server with all of my sites, and cannot put those at risk (those sites pay the bills - neverside currently makes no revenue). So - if anyone would like to help me out and post the facts on IRC security for me to assess, then I may change my mind. (I'm not saying of course that having the IRC is a guarantee that the server will be rooted - it hasn't been in all this time to my knowledge- though Shawn, for instance, did demonstrate to me once how root access could be obtained through an unpatched version of IRC we were running - that is one more area among many that I don't have the spare time to keep track of right now). Please keep in mind that the "current" server situation is pouring $450/mo of my own savings down the drain, so I do need to do something to help that situation. If this is important to you guys, please do this, since I will not have time to look further into the issue myself right now, as I'm behind on finishing my taxes, have several concurrent projects, and the server move itself will take a good bit of time.

Since the community is so small - why do we bother having out own IRC server when there are loads already out there to use? #neverside anyone?

Thanks Lucifel - good point (I hadn't thought about that). If that's a direction that everyone might be happy with for the moment, until we grow to a point to warrant our own, then everyone please chime in with your opinions. I'd still be open to someone informing me about the facts about IRC security - if anyone intends to do that, please do within the next 1 to 2 days so I'll have sufficient time to read it, or my initial decision will be final as is, for the time being. An initial attempt at digging up the details on Google/etc did not yield sufficient into to make a decision off of - so if anyone knows the facts, please share them.

FYI, here is the relevant info from our new host regarding IRC:

May I host IRC Services?
SoftLayer allows the use of private Internet relay chat servers for communication among private parties. SoftLayer absolutely prohibits the use of IRC servers connected to public IRC networks or servers. IRC servers that result in interference of service, malicious network activity or increased demand on network security services are in direct violation of the acceptable use policy. Violation of the IRC policy will result in methods of resolution under the acceptable use policy.
