Theres more to a HDTV than it just saying HDTV on it. Just cause it says HDTV doesn't mean its equal quality. I really don't like sony, but their TV's are wonderful. If you've ever seen a sony LCD, you'll notice the screen is always much brighter with superior quality (most of the time).

yeah i know that if you spend $1600 on a 32" HDTV compared to a $600 non-name brand HDTV there is going to be difference, but i've looked in walmart and seem some amazing pictures on the HDTVs there.... now if you compare them to the sony, or samsung at bestbuy, well yeah the sony will win... but if you dont have a better HDTV sitting next to your $600 tv i dont think you will notice much difference.

Nothing wins over a Samsung. Everything looks different in a household setting and on top of that, most stores (like at Best Buy and Wal*Mart) don't even send a true HD signal to their TVs.
Everything looks about the same if you send through regular OTA broadcast material. These brands like Westinghouse and Polaroid really have NO BUSINESS selling HDTVs. If you're not going to get something decent, get a regular Sony WEGA TV, not the rear-projection HDTV WEGAs. Unless you're going to send HD content to a TV, there's no reason for you to get an HDTV.
And let me rant, because that's basically all I do here. 480p/780p/1080p are NOT CLASSIFIED AS HD! 480p is regular ota broadcast material. 780p is what most Xbox360 games are displayed as when auto detection is used. 1080p is most likely coming from an upconverted DVD (which WILL look better, but it's pointless for movies that were a bit blurry to begin with). It irks me whenever I look on the back of a video game box and it says "480p HDTV." I want to ***** slap whoever put that on there <_<

Anywho, don't buy an LCD HDTV unless you're going to go with a good brand like Samsung (what my mom and I have -- I wouldn't buy an LCD HDTV from any other manufacturer...the blacks and whites are so pure on this thing).

Also, if you're planning to watch a lot of sports or action movies, I would go with a plasma screen HDTV. Ghosting on my dad's Pioneer is almost nonexistent while, on my mom's Samsung, ghosting is hugely apparent when we're watching action movies (even when watching superbit content) and sports.

Sorry that was so long. I just don't want people to cheap out on this kind of thing! You don't want to be stuck with the Geo of HDTVs, do you???

Right so Samsung is the only brand that knows how to make a lcd hdtv? Unless you've tested out other tvs then shh.

My dad's $600 tv is fucking amazing. Just because it is an off-brand doesn't mean it is ****.

We have two farm interns that came from Peru on special farming visa's and they intend on getting a PS3 when they have enough money, and since they aren't living in the same house as us(we gave them an older house we used to lived in), there is no TV for them, and well it is a PS3, I wanted to surprise them with something that made their games look like they were intended to, I just didn't want to spend a whole lot of money.

I already know most of what there is to know about the technology, I just wanted to know if anyone knew of any deals or "bargains" that they have seen on hdtv's.

I was talking about as far as LCDs go. I already addressed the fact that any ELITE plasma will own any Samsung LCD TV.

I have tested out other TVs. We buy electronics like crazy.

I see AV has given more details about the situation...
I still don't think you should buy an LCD TV, even if it's to be used with a PS3. A higher-end flat-screen television should do it.
If you're still adamant about buying an LCD TV, then you can try
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ThirdCategoryList.jsp?SecondCategoryCode=1506
http://www.newegg.com/Store/Category.aspx?Category=264& ... me=TV-Plasma-LCD-DLP
Hyundai actually has some really nice screens for the money. They're beginning to make a name for themselves in the LCD TV market!
