Changing white in an image to black

I've googled it about a hundred times in different ways, but all I got were tutorials on how to turn coloured photos into black and white. That's not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for help on how to turn a white part of a photo (fur in this case) into black. So, turning a white animal into a black one. I've tried creating a seperate layer from the original image and filling in the fur section with black and setting the layer to colour. That didn't work very well, it was still a light colour, not the dark coal (okay maybe not that extreme) that I wanted. I've played with the brightness and contrast and hue levels too, that didn't work either. The burn tool isn't very reliable in this case.

Is there somehow a way to turn white into black but retain features, such as the texture of the fur? Probably not, but if there is I'd greatly appreciate the advice and suggestions. =D
Btw, if you guys want to see the image I'm trying to convert, just ask.

Use a brush and set the setting to Hue with black as the foreground color? I don't know if that will do anything...
You could try using a gradient map.
Or dodge and burn that mofo.

I got this using a levels adjustment layer where the leftmost slider was dragged to the right, as well as a curves layer and a layer filled with black, set to colour and with a low opacity (40%). All of these layers were constrained to a very touchy selection that had to be changed at the furry edges a few times.

If this is anything like what you're looking for, I can post the PSD for you to look at.

Alright I'm gonna try everything you guys did.

Here's the image btw, the big dog. (Lawl, that cat makes me laugh all the time).

As for Kryptonite, yeah that's the effect I'm going for.

Thanx everyone! =D

I was bored, so I played with it.. Couldn't use the same techniques as the rabbit, but roughly the same idea. I had to use the burn tool around the face.

Thank you so much Kryptonite. So you only did that by making level adjustment layers and curve adjustment layers?

As for the comment about the cat...Wait what? It's not real? o.o How can you tell?
