Boycot Vista til SP1

I'm all about new software.

But Vista isn't even freakin released to the public and Microsoft is planning a major service pack? What the ****?

I motion for software companies to release quality, tested software. So if no one buys it until SP1, then maybe they'll get the freakin hint.

Spread the word.

Vista has been in the corporate environment since what.. november? That means that they've found issues to address and intend to fix them with a SP.

An OS the size of and complexity of Vista will never be perfect on release, be thankful MS has responded reasonably quickly with an SP instead of the joke of the wait times that XP had initially to get exploits and vulnerabilities fixed.

that's still unacceptable. This just says that huge corporations can go ahead and release obviously buggy code. No, not perfect on the first release, but that's two months its been out, there's no reason they should be planning a service pack already. Maybe a small patch here and there, but a service pack?

get out of here.

Windows isn't the only one either, don't get me started on Cisco. Cisco's old IOS versions used to always be General Deployment, and always stay that version for like, a year. now they're all early releases of code with tons of bugs and are always getting replaced wiht other new releases.

My point?

Software quality is slowly going down the tubes and we're allowing it.

not buying Vista until its fixed would make that statement, no?

"If" I were still a Windows user, I would follow my standard "personal best practice" of never upgrading to a new version of Windows until at bare minimum, several months after it has been out to the public. The same goes for service packs. This is the policy in the IT dept I work at part time as well.

To be fair, I follow this same practice on OS X as well, albeit to a less-stringent degree. For OS X I wait at least several weeks after major patches are released (unless they happen to be serious security issues, which is rare). I plan to wait at least 1+ months before upgrading to Leopard when it comes out in several months. I prefer, in any OS, to not risk interrupting my workflow to deal with the nearly-guaranteed bugs that will initially surface with any major upgrades. Looking at the specs of Tiger vs. (what is known of) Leopard, I do at least feel the cost of upgrading is fair for what I'll get... whereas Windows XP MCE + a few 3rd party programs = essentially Vista.

I still have 6 XP-based computers in my house though, and do not plan on upgrading any of them to Vista, as, excessive hardware requirements aside, I don't see enough value in what Vista has to offer for the price (particularly since you have to buy at minimum Vista Home 'Premium' in order to get any of the well-advertised features of Vista... the upgrade price of which is as much as a full family-pack group license of OS X). At the very most, I might eventually upgrade to Vista for the copy of XP running in Boot Camp and Parallels on my Mac if for some unlikely reason there is some Windows software I need that drops support for XP (unlikely for a very long time).

In general, Vista will still sell plenty though... as all new computers will come with it. I doubt the masses who already have computers are likely to upgrade for a pretty long time though.

For me, I just don't see significant (if any) advantage in upgrading.

.... hell I think my next computer will be a Mac..... but that will not be for a long time as my laptop is still quite young and fully functional and functioning

I'm fine with my XP, and it's fine with me (I'm not an uninformed user :-P).

agreed that XP is still the way to go, and totally with AC about having to wait on all patches, etc. However my complaint is that we have to wait, and that software development is so shotty anymore, it's sickening.

I've played around a lot with Vista and have found no significant bugs. I'm not sure if you have never used Vista before in your life or not, but if you haven't you should stop speaking out of your ***.

How can you think that it is bad to have an SP1 coming along, c'mon now. You really think getting everyone on neverside to not buy vista until SP1 comes out will really 'give them the hint?' -- they won't even notice you didn't buy it, nor would they care to hear you haven't. They have so many others purchasing it, you don't even matter to them.

I won't be upgrading any time soon, primarily because I don't need to.

Vista is a good upgrade. Faster performance in a lot of things and its more secure. If you dont upgrade now around the release of Crysis should be a good time to do it. I also just found out from staff at Microsoft about SP1. They said that it usually gets a lot of publicity around any service pack release. They said they start the enginnering process earlier now and by the time its out it should be around the same time as all other SP1's. Also it isn't because it is buggy that it is been made but because servicing a release gets more and more important all the time. If they didnt service it or over a year, rumors would probably say something like "Microsoft Vista is so bad it took them over a year to fix it."
