Format your hard drive and reinstall windows. If that doesnt fix it then you can worry. If it doesn't do the trick post back in here and I will tell you some more trouble shooting steps. If you want to backup your hard drive. You will have to plug it in to a pc and run it as a slave so you can copy files off it to the pc.

That Windows error you get after you press F1 is a scary message indeed. My Aunt recently got that error on her computer. I fixed it for her by reinstalling Windows XP, but if that doesn't work it may be time to format.

Is ur hard drive sata or IDE. U need to plug it into a pc with a working hard drive with windows installed on it. Take the files off it and store them on that partiton for the time been. Then format and reinstall then you can take your data back.

you might want to take it to a store for them to do it. Laptops are very easy to break by opening them.
the HDD is usualy on a slide in compartment on the sides, with maybe two normal looking screws.
then you need a sort of adaptor to let you plug it into you pc. kind of like a cable plug.
then just use the IDE cable that should be empty, the slave is the connector at the end of the cable (not the one part way down the cable)

As people have mentioned in this thread already, your first priority is to get any data you need off of the laptop. Do this however you want -- follow some of the suggestions provided already, use a Linux LiveCD, some kind of recovery cd, or take it to a store/repair technician.
But whatever you do, don't reformat it afterwards and keep using it. The drive is in the process of dying, or (hopefully not) has already died.

SMART error means your hard drive is bad. It wasn't kidding when it said back up your data. If you have another computer around, you will have to buy a 3.25" to 2.5" IDE adaptor. Obviously, you need to buy another harddrive. Getting the harddrive out of the laptop is easy: you just need the right tools. You need a small-head philips screwdriver and the harddrive is usually in a bay on the side, with the exception of some (older) laptops.
