bursted hole in paper
hi guys,
I want to create a 'bursted hole in paper' effect (see attached file for an example of what I want to archieve).
How do you create something like this? Can you point me to some tutorials about this or give some explanation please.
thanks for helping!

Interesting
I design newspapers, I might have to steal this idea somewhere down the road.
I didn't spend very long making this but you could certainly have a field day with a little more effort.
There are two big layers here. The first is the actual "hole" that serves as the background for whatever's flying through. Such a hole would have flat sides so I drew a rough shape with the Polygon tool then filled in with blue.
The other is the shards of paper. Starting with the edges of the shape ^^ I drew random quadrilaterals and triangles extending out again with the Polygon tool, then filled in white. To erode the torn edges a bit, I picked a rough brush (Photoshop comes loaded with a bunch but you may have to tinker with them some in the Brush panel to get them looking realistic) and erased a bit of the remaining edges. Then I used the Burn tool at a low exposure to give the paper some shadow and depth.
After that, create a layer on top of everything of what you want busting through. I also duplicated my shards of paper layer and darkened it a bit (Hue/Saturation) to function as a drop shadow, erasing some parts that would have been in the middle of my big hole.
It's a start. I attached my PSD. Have fun with it.
