The only time I don't maximize is when I'm designing a web site using multiple programs at once.

On a res of 1280x1024, I keep mine at about 4/5s of the screen, then fill the rest with iTunes, IMs etc.

I'm always maximized (dual monitor, so cool).

Dave, I'm really picky about making sure a website's design is as "convenient" as possible to as many users as possible. In this case though, I advise you design for a full browser window in 1024x768. The width of the current Neverside design and the new one that you've been tinkering with are both just about right, in my opinion.
