Screen Resolution: do you maximize your browser window?
I have been studying screen resolution (particularly the average resolutions of Neverside visitors recorded in our logfiles), and decided to post a quick poll to help me answer a question my stats can't answer.
From Neverside's stats, I know (over a sample data of several months) an average of about 5.5% of visitors use 800x600, and 43% use 1024x768. Everyone else uses a higher resolution. Regarding the 800x600, I have an untested theory that at least a percent or so of that might be accounted for by web developers testing various sites to see how they work at different resolutions (I know I do, so probably others do as well)... so in my opinion, it is about 4-5% 800x600. Amazingly (probably due to the many different LCD and laptop screens out there) there are 116 unique resolutions that have accessed Neverside
On to the question...
Though I personally tend to have my browser windows maximized, as I prefer not to be distracted by the piles of applications and icons behind, I know that's not always the case with everyone (I also use tons of Firefox tabs, so having the screen maximized lets me get to more of them at once).
So it's likely that 1024x768 users who do not maximize their browser see things differently than we "hope" they will when we optimize a layout for 1024x768 users. This doesn't so much affect users with higher resolutions (over 50% here at NS), as their non-maximized screens have as or nearly as much space as a maximized 1024x768 screen.
Anyhow, I was just wondering what percentage of people fit into this category of 1024x768 non-maximized users

I'm 1024x768. It's the right size for my ailing eyes to view the font and see the details that I need to see when I visit various art sites. I don't develop anything besides a bad smoking cough, so I can't be too much help on your statistical analyzing of Neverside's user base for screen resolution.

I've got 1680x1050 for my res (wish I could do bigger), and I keep my browser at about a 2/3 of the width of the screen, the other 1/3 is for IM and what not.
My reason? Sites tend to look kind of "lots" in the vast space that is to the left and right of the normal 800- width layout.

I always keep mine maximised, I tend to get rather pissy if people force me to use websites in smaller windows to view everything correctly, especially if it's some scripting which auto changes the size.
And, 1152x864.

I have opera on its own desktop so it is always maximized (there's not option on the poll for that :P). I use 1280x1024 resolution.

1280x1024x32 here, normally full-screen unless Im developing/testing, so I can easily switch folders, Notepade++, etc. Optimization for 1024x768 is a good plan, that way 800x600 wont have that much of a problem, and anyways you can always have someone submit a 800x600 specific .CSS stylesheet maybe? As long as it works properly in Opera I'll be happy
