"Blended" Circles

Hello, all!
This is my first post and I am very happy to be a part of Neverside forums! I have a question on how the paragon of digital art--the amazing Robouk--created those circles in the Smooth Metal Tutorial (See the picture in step 1).
I tried to create those circles using the elliptical marquee, but I got this:

As you can see, when I combined the selection and filled it, the "edges" of the circles were sharp. So, my question is, how did he exactly "blend" the two together, creating those curvy smooth edges?

Thank you very much in advance!

I would think Rob used the Pen tool there, placing a point on your edges. Then you can drag the handles to make it nice and smooth.

I'm not near a copy of Photohsop, but you'd basically draw two (vector) circles on top of eachother, merge them together into one path, and then drag the handles to ease that edge some. I'll post some screenies when I get home; the Pen tool is a bit cumbersome if you're new to it.

- Draw 2 circle selections overlapping in 1 layer with the circle selection tool.
- The selection should look somewhat like a peanut with 2 sharp edges in the middle.
- While the selection is still active, go to Select > Modify > Smooth, enter a value (in pixels)
- When you're not happy with it, undo it and try another value.
- Fill the now smoothed shape.

That's how I'd do it, but there may be other ways...

Oh, wow! Thank you so very much crzyivn! This may not be a new technique for any of you, but I find this extraordinary! I have never used the "smooth" modification until now! So that's what it does! I guess you do learn something every day! This was a great help! Thank you very much your reply!
Thank you for the effort, Sparky!
