About Web design portfolio

I want to ask some questions!? If I want to make an art portfolio, how should I perpare? Because I am not a student and artist, but I am very interested in Graphics or web design, I often see many masterpiece someone else in web site or magazine. May be I haven't learn some skills of graphics or art formatly. So I can't understand all about those skills in the book.
Meanwhile, I want to know how to do the art portfolio and then what something is necessary and include what is in there, after I want to ask what's the web site have these topic and tutorials.
Finally, I come from hong kong, so my english language is not very well, but i wish someone can understand my question or tell me about how to do the portfolio?

Quality over quantity. I always want to add various things in my portfolio but you should also have a lab section of you want to show tons of your work. You can check mine here: http://www.jerlynthomas.com
I have a main portfolio then I decided to add a lab section so people can see what I am currently working on that may or may not reach my portfolio.
