pen tool lines disappear during use of pen tool

Ok i hope i can explain this clearly.

Using the pen tool. lets say i click once, move the mouse, click again and ill see that line. all fine so far. but when i then move the mouse and click again and hold this time to get a curve my previous preview line disappears.

when trying to do whiskers this can be rather annoying.

hopefully ive explained the issue clearly enough.
Anyone have any ideas?

Are you by any chance using AI 10? If so, did you update it to 10.03?
