What to do with..
I recently left a job to head back to school. Well instead of a retirement watch, my boss handed me a computer. True story.
Just the box, it's 2.5ghz, 512mb ram, 40gig hd, integrated sound/everything else. It's in good shape but it's kind of useless; the one I use at home has comparable specs.
So. What to do with it? I kind of want to install some breed of Linux and fart around with a new unfamiliar OS, but this is a solid machine and that seems kind of wasteful. Does anyone have some suggestions of something cool/productive to do with it?
Sell it, obviously an option; how much do you think I could get for it? Thanks guys.

That sounds like a fun thing to do, Sparky, install another OS. A great learning experience.
You cant really harm the computer, after all, there is the reformating option...LOL
I am not sure where you reside but you may also have the option to donate it to your local community centre where it can be used by many.
Good Luck!

You can use it as a media center pc, using Windows MCE. Or maybe you could wait and buy Vista then put that on it with the MCE. Or you could use it as a file server or something.

or as chris5050 said use it as a media centre PC and hook it up to your TV. (may think of getting a nice case for it tho)

Pop in a new video card and you have a decent gaming rig. A budget machine, sure, but it'd probably handle many games surprisingly well. Does the motherboard have AGP or PCI-E? Check it out.
Or, I'll buy it off you for $50 (and I'll pay shipping, too) if you're interested. PM me.

I am not so hardware savvy. It's got integrated video, could I install a video card and use that instead? There is an olive green/brown slot; that's AGP, yes? I'm not a gamer anyway. I design & develop & listen to music. Oh and porn, too.

that idea of a tv is great, as is the gaming system. and a 2.5 ghz is no throw-away. They are still selling good on the market...check your local flyers...$50.00 is way to cheap. I use a 2.5 myself.

I'll take the CPU
But yeah, I'd make it into a media center PC if you're not too game savvy. I'm not sure the olive green/brown slot is...the AGP slot should be labeled. If you want to, start making videos and all that crap with it...I'd buy a new Vid card though and a 120 HDD as well
