Network load on CPU

Hey,

Does anyone have any good tips to help take network load off of my CPU? I noticed that my network connections right done when I am doing anything CPU intensive or I have CPUIdle running too long. It's terrible.

I may look into a NIC that has it's own CPU, but I hear that they run $100+. Let me know if you guys know of any software that helps or any tips.

You're probably using the onboard ethernet. Try getting a NIC and see if that helps.

Actually, I am using a NIC. I may try switching to the onboard though, to see if maybe the NIC I have is just crappy.

Haha that could be it. I like 3com NICs in particular but right now I'm using a Realtek.

I think ultimately, it won't make a difference to your performance, and I wouldn't worry about it. It takes CPU power to interpret incoming packets that make sense to the operating system, something a NIC with an onboard CPU (if there is such a thing) can't do. God forbid you lose < 1% of your CPU power.

Do browser caches have anything to do with this?
I noticed that when I was on the net for a while it became slower the closer I got to the cache size for the Temp Files.
Once I closed the browser and let it empty it worked great until I reach this point again.
I increased the the amount of disc space to use for the browser in the browser options and it works okay until I get to the new point again. I just close the browser now...lol

That would be the case, EXCEPT, this is intermittent. I'll explain:

When the slow down occurs, it lasts for about 3 minutes or so, then goes back to normal. I can usually stop it if I end CPUIdle. It's weird.

And yes James, there are NICs with their own CPUs. The one I was looking at purchasing is: http://www.killernic.com/KillerNic/

It has a 400Mhz CPU/NPU.

Oh. my computer light flashes for quite a bit after I close the browser...it's dumping the temp files.
why would you stop your cpu's idle...doesnt seem like the correct thing to do.
what would that be listed under in the processes list in the Task Manager. i dont have that in there...is that weird?
this interestes me. i see the cpu usage on the performance tab but cant find where to stop it...LOL
could you fill me in...quench my curioustiy...

a cpu on a network card, wow, would that be for like a server type system?
