Lost in Translation?: AI to PS to web

I'm not sure if the problem occurs when i export from AI (v. 9.0.1 and off hand i dont recall what image types it supports for export... probably PSD..)
or if it happens when i resize in photoshop... or..well, somewhere along the lines, the long, straight, off-axis lines appear as if they have jagged edges now that the image is posted as it will reside on the web (star on right).
(using offsite instead of attached-- as a bandwidth courtesy... not sure if that helps... but...)
Maybe it's just an optical illusion, but there's no lines behind it? do you see it? i mean-- maybe its just my monitor?

i would guess this is a common speed-bump. what would this irregularity be called if i decide to pursue a tutorial?

does anyone have a quick-fix suggestion? basically looking for something as in:
"you're probably getting that when you__________, so next time try _______ instead." -- i realize of course that i can't expect someone to examine my work and provide feedback, but it's always worth a shot, right?

Why are you exporting to Photoshop? Illustrator can save files for web as well.

The jagged edges appear when you save the file as a GIF. GIFs don't support partial transparency (which allows the smooth transition between opaque and transparent areas). In order to avoid these edges either save the gif with the same background color as the page or save as a PNG.

If you end up using PNG you'll have to add this hack to your page:

This will enable Internet Explorer 6 to understand the alpha transparency used by the PNG file.
