Lost space on my external HDDLost space on my external HDDCurrently viewing this thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests)  July 7th, 2006 09:29 PM Lost space on my external HDD I just bought a 250 GB External HDD today and hooked it up to my laptop and when i looked at it it says the capcity it only 232 GB... where did the 18 gigs go that i payed for!!! I think i heard of a way to stop this but yeah.. any idea? Thank you ___________________ xxYY July 7th, 2006 10:29 PM Hard drive capacities are advertised with a gigabyte meaning 1,000,000,000 bytes where as one gigabyte is actually 1,073,741,824 bytes. So when the drive is actually installed it will come up with the actual gigabyte capacity is opposed to the advertised "gigabyte" capacity. As you can see on your posted image, your drive has 249,995,624,448 bytes as it's capacity, which would be advertised as 250GB, but is actually calculated to 232.826569 gigabytes. ___________________ Last edited by Andy_K, July 7th, 2006 10:30 PM (Edited 1 times) July 7th, 2006 11:28 PM Yeh, basically, it's normal. I can't believe they still continue to get away with this... deceptive marketing. The only way a drive can be used at all is if it is formatted... and every file system has overhead. I believe I've read on hardware reviews as well that they tend to round up "just a few GB" sometimes even if they can't actually reach the exact number.
