hey great tutorial but im having a slight problem cause im sort of new to this photoshop thing Grin but um when i convert the image to grayscale it says i have to flatten the layers which makes my duplicate disappear...but when i dont flatten and apply the indexed color it gets flattened anyway lol.. pff so is there anyway that i can disable flattening or something? i use Photoshop CS2 btw.

Hey guys - apologies for the delay... been quite busy with the new Neverside upgrades. I'll try to get you an answer (and ideally fix or update the tutorial) within the next few days.

Hey guys, thanks for your patience... I've been spending every waking moment this week working on the design for the home page layout on the upcoming Neverside upgrade... it's allllmost ready to pass it off to the pros who can code it much better than I can haha Grin

Anyhow, I gave the tutorial a quick spin and saw the glitch you're referring to. I'll update the tutorial itself asap, but for now here's what to do.

You have several options...

You can ignore the step asking you to make an extra copy of the text and then,

a) Complete the tutorial and retype your text (same font, size, etc), and drag it to the right spot in the middle of the fire. If you just have a bit of text this is probably the best bet. Or...

b) Have another empty PSD file open and drag your text layer into it for temporary keeping - drag it back after the fire effect is complete. Or...

b) This is only worth bothering if your text is more complicated (and even still, option B is probably easier even though it requires 2 files). Instead of duplicating the text in the step, CTRL + Click on the text layer to make a selection of the text. Then choose Select > Save Selection, and press OK. Now go into the Channels palette (the tab next to the Layers palette), and click the eye icon to hide the channel (it will have an odd effect during the Indexed Color step otherwise).

Then return to the Layers palette and complete the tutorial as usual. At the end, return to the Channels palette and CTRL + Click on the channel with your text outline in it -- go back to the Layers palette and make a new layer and fill the selection with black. You may have to then move the text slightly to align it in the center of the fire, as the Wind filter appears to move the output a bit from its original location.

Anyhow hope this helps Grin

You need to switch your image mode back to RGB once you have the flame (black body) effect. You can then create a new layer for your saved copy of the original text.

Thats how I do it anyway, hope this helps Wink
