Photography Question

I'm looking to do some black and white photography, I have a new camera and it doesn't have a black and white mode. I know I can do it with filters.

I think I need red, green and yellow filters to make it black and white but I'm not sure. Can anyone shed any light for me?

I'm saving up for a Canon Digital Rebel D350, but my old Canon-T50 will still see some use.

There's no such filter that can make an image black and white. Color is a property of light, and a filter can only block the light of a given color. Using multiple color filters will just make the image black.

There's no real need for a black & white mode on the camera itself, because the mode will simply take a color picture and convert it to grayscale immediatley afterwards (I think). This is assuming you're talking about a digital camera, since in a film camera you just use different film.

The solution is to just convert the image to grayscale, as Jordan suggests, in Photoshop.

Some might argue that digital black & white doesn't look the same as real film b&w, and they would probably be right because film has a larger luminosity range, which means it is sensitive to a larger range of levels of brightness, than digital sensors.

Woops, 350D. I'm also looking into the 20D or 30Ds though, but they're a little more $$$.

dont do image > desaturate. that is the worst possible way. i suggest going to image > adjustments > channel mixer, checking the monochrome option, and playing with the sliders. there are a few other 'preferred' ways, just google it.

I'd agree with film, there's something monochromatic film captures that you just can't get otherwise. Trust me, I didn't think there'd be a difference, but when you see the finished product...yeah. You'll be a believer too.
