I can't use the mesh tool if i live trace an image?

I have an image (eg: a leaf). Instead of using the pen tool to trace the leaf out, i used the live trace option. after that, i want to add gradient to various parts in the leaf. So i select the mesh tool to add in some paths in the leaf. But it can't work out. It just can't add any paths to the leaf that had been live traced.

So the only thing i can do is to trace the leaf out by myself using the pen tool. After that, only i can use the mesh tool.
Why is that so?

The Live Trace might have created compound paths, which don't allow the use of meshes. You can see which parts of the object are compound paths by expanding the layer in the Layers palette.
