I don't recommend conseling, or therepy, or anything like that, because I understand it.
If you're trying to find comfort in things, learn not to keep buying, but rather build. The sense of satisfaction you'll gain from improving your craft and taking pride in what you've done is worth so much more.
Trust me, I know what it's like to constantly shop and want and need more. I used to (used to?) be the kid who bought all the latest and greatest computer stuff or whatever, didn't like cars or woodworking, just always having something better. I still do spend ridiculous amounts of money, but it's not as important to me as it used to be.
Anyway...I still buy things, but a few things really got to me.
First...I was only content with what I had for a short while, then it was on to needing something else to make me happy. This caused me to pause and reflect, trying to figure out why I couldn't be content. For everyone it's different, but just try to figure out why, and you'll be on to the next step.
For me, I needed to create, not just have. I spent a little bit more, got some power tools, and started building things. First it was a shelf or box, and yeah, it sucked. But I kept going, now I've built some pretty awesome stuff and I'm not slowing down. Next project on the list is a nice rack for my new servers, after that is a huge habitat for my asian water monitors....
And in the meantime I will do things here and there for other people, sell what I don't need (which is hard because I'm a packrat).
There's nothing wrong with wanting things. I think if we didn't want this or that sometimes we'd miss out on the high we get from the drive to work toward those goals.
That doesn't mean the goal in and of itself has to be your ultimate driving force. I'd venture a guess that you don't really know why you're here on earth. It's time to find or make a purpose for yourself, accept it for what it is, and learn to be content.
Then you'll realize that the things that you thought would make you happy are only things that eventually get thrown away.
