KDE > Gnome.

KDE is the best, there are so many programs coded for KDE.

Why did Ubuntu choose Gnome for their main OS? Ive heard that KDE is a bastard on resources, is that true? I remember trying Suse and it took up all 786 mb of my memory.

KDE is good for newbies. However, once you have used Linux for a while, the gratuitous eye-candy and general childishness of KDE gets annoying.

Gnome is the serious choice.

Hi, I'm new here Smile.

But, aside from that, most of the entirety of my time spent with linux has been using flux or blackbox, mostly fluxbox, and some fvwm. Sure they're not the most user friendly but after using them for a while I've grown to love the commonbox look. I used FVWM for all of like two weeks, it's heavily configurable and some people can make it look decent, but I was never one of those.

But if I had to choose between KDE or gnome, I'd definitely say gnome, because of the bloat of KDE and the whole crystalline aura of KDE.

I personally have used KDE for about 3 years on and off. I have tried Gnome and some others but I don't think that any compare to KDE. Also there is a lot of support availabe for KDE if you need it (IRC, Forums, Newsgroups, etc).

It can really be a personal choice kind of thing for someone who is new, so you might want to try both and see which ones you like.

Good luck to you.

GNOME is just as fat. Also, most unix-like operating systems make full use of your memory by caching various services (disk access, for example). If a user program requests more memory, the operating system automatically frees these caches. Memory usage on my two most heavily used machines, one with 1 GiB of RAM and the other with 128 MiB or so, usually hovers around 100%. Both normally run KDE sessions; the swap space usually isn't touched.

Try them both out and stick with the one you find most comfortable--though, as far as serious use. power, and consistency is concerned, newbie or not, the only choice is KDE.

Moved to Tech Cornfields. (Oh, and sorry---I forgot the redirect)

I prefer the Gnome environment, but I'm not too fond of GTK's widgetset---KDE does better in that area. But I like the Gnome look and feel most of all, which is why I use it, but I use a lot of KDE applications on top of Gnome.
