Brushes not working! :(

I can't get my brushes to work! My fill tool (paint bucket) will fill like it's supposed to, but I cannot get the most basic paintbrush to paint! what's wrong? there's no selection or anything, I open a new doc and try to paint in it, but it won't. I open an existing pic and try to paint in it, and it won't either! Is there some option somewhere I've accidentally selected or something? Help please!

make sure masking isn't on. Try restarting photoshop and try again.

if that doesn't work. make sure the opacity is 100% also that the flow is at 100%

Also make sure you're using the Paint brush and not the history brush

Also make sure the brush mode is set to normal
