AJAX and PHP

I've read some articles about AJAX and I was wondering how well does this work with PHP and MySQL. I've seen the thread that Bigtoach started (click here) about the MySQL db and the use of AJAX and it's pretty cool, but are there any really useful combinations of the two, that you know of? Or do you have an opinion about AJAX that you would like to share?

From the things I've seen (and I've not seen much) there are some cool things you can do with it, like the form validation in real time (as seen on Sitepoint), and I've seen some other things over here. And they look pretty 'cool' to me, but are they in any way useful for PHP?

Just wondering about this, cause I haven't seen many threads on it...

I fail to see how PHP has anything to do with it. AJAX is simply a HTTP request made by Javascript/XML. This request could be made to a PHP page, or any other page.

Personally I've found many uses for it around my site. I use it for smilies (to save queries), polls (when you vote), games, and other various features.
