What specs should I look for in a notebook/laptop PC?
I'd have a basic idea if I was looking at desktops, but I don't know too much about what's good and what isn't for a notebook. Obviously it depends on what I want to use it for, so I'll try and give you a basic idea.
All I essentially need from it is the ability to browse the internet, and play music. It's pretty important that it would have a wireless internet connnection for this too. But, I'd like it also to play video and if possible have it be able to handle making Flash movies.
So I'd really appriciate it if you could give me an idea of what specs I'd need for something like that. Thanks very much.

As long as it has at least 512MB RAM, you'll be fine.
I bought my laptop just over a year ago with 256MB, and i'm always struggling for rescources.

Get one with a Pentium M, not a P4. They eat up your battery.
Of course, I've never had experience with a p4 laptop but I've read that it does eat up your battery life and it makes logical sense. :P and my 1.6ghz pentium m laptop lasts around 4-6 hours (depends if i'm playing games and/or if i leave my wireless internet card on or off)

Pentium-M's are incredible. They have a different architecture than P4, so the clock speeds cannot be compared. For an accurate comparison to p4, double the clock speed.
It is MUCH cheaper to get a smaller internal HD and a large external HD. I have a 60 gig internal and 250 gig ext and it works fine for me.
Look at centrino if you want a good wireless - centrio means pentium m + wireless card + special software. Mine works great.

Well, alright. This is what I went for - I tried to take all your advice on board, hope I didn't screw up too badly.
1.4GHz Intel Celeron M 360
512mb RAM
60gb hard drive - but I'll probably take Phil's advice and go for an external hard drive to go with it.
LefthooK - as much as I'd love a system like that, my funds were a little too restricted!

I'd look for one with 512 Ram and the Pentium M processor, good for battery life
