i hope this isnt offending
but, why is it that everyone seems to try to make their own tutorial sites these days? I mean, there's gotta be thousands of these sites giving out the same information. With great's like spoono and robouk, it's like trying to compete with microsoft (on a much smaller scale of course).
I dunno, it just seems pointless...anyone else feel this way?

Ya, I agree with you. It's pretty strange, isn't it?
I had a tutorial site as well. It was pretty large site. But then I got bored. So I sold it. Heh. It was tough for me compute with so many others.
But yet people didn't stop. I don't think they will. It's inevitable. There are new tutorial sites everyday. I think everyone like to "teach". It's fun to teach people for a chance. It makes one proud of himself.
Don't you think there are too many blogs as well? I mean, come on! I know people who has 5-10 blog sites. Phew. Grrr.. as a matter of fact 90% of the people I know have a blog. Like I've the time to read them. Who cares how was your day? Keep that in your diary! Retarded people (i'm one of them. heh)

i think a lot of people put tutorials on portfolio sites.. most of the tutorial sites i've seen that don't come anywhere near the greats, have also been portfolio sites

A lot of people make tutorial sites with their own tutorials on them. I wouldn't mind seeing more of those.

same here. i think that's the problem tho. most people, like myself just play around with a filter or something till it looks right, but don't remember the steps i took to redo what i did.

ya i'm aware of robouk being gone lol
but ya, i think it's just getting really reduntant. If you have a site that you want to populate, you should at least offer some fresh content, your not going to find much success reinventing the wheel.
I also think that this abundance of tutorial sites is leading to a very monotone design world. People aren't finding out much for themselves it seems, theyre just copying other trendy techniques that aren't going to land you a job in the real desing world, simply because trends are trends, and they come and go, I think if people spent more time developing their own ideas and concepts for their projects, they might actually grow when it comes to becoming a great designer.
But on the latter, these tutorial sites can be good for new photoshop users to get used to how it works, although, since this information is obviously abundant, it brings me back to thinking about how pointless it is to create such a site, people are gonna find the larger, more easily accessable sites before they find these random tutorial sites that everyone seems to have, so why bother?
I guess people need a reason to make a page, i dont blame them for that. But maybe spend a bit more time next time on actually providing something new to to the table of the web?

if you make a good tutorial, people will come... especially since you can list your tutorial on the big tutorial sites, and they just link to you.
over the summer when I had time, I made 2 illustrator tutorials for rosem.com and I still get about 200-400 uniques a day with little to no content to speak of.

I get what you are saying Gray, but businesses have to have trends as well, because what the businesses offer always have a demographic of some sort. Not only does the business have to have a specific audiance, but they have to study these specific types of people and expand their knowledge, therefore either expanding the type of people who will use their product or service, or develop a stronger niche.
I think it's imparitive that we have trendy graphics because MOST people go with the flow, instead of making their own path in life.
You ask for a less monotypical type of design, but what happens when the design changes and becomes more and more colorful? a lot of people will like it and it becomes a trend, then eventually people will find something new and say the older design is monotypical...
it's an ongoing circle.
there is no way around it.
customization to fit every person's needs can only go so far. you have to create something a lot of people like, otherwise, it is going to fail.
