What I'm asking is what could I have done to make it better?

The one he made is http://gfx.eggo.us/stuff/AJBC.jpg

Well your's was an improvement. However the thundercats logo in the background is copyrighted so I'm pretty sure he can't use it.

Could someone refer me to the article in question? I'm in the process of working up a few concepts of my own business card, and any assistance right now would do.

Yeah, I knew that was an issue. His whole thing is Thundercats. I need to let him know about it before some copyright-holder-guys show up at his business door with a summons.

not more than 4 colours.
for a webdesign or design studio include an email address as a perminant address is likely to change more often than the email addy.

Techincally in the printing word you can't have more than 4 colors because to a printer all colors can be comprised of CMYK, so if you have 22 different colors in your b-card but they are comprised of C,M,K then its technically only a 3 color job.

The one caveat to this is metallic inks. These are expensive, but techically count as a 5th color and heres why: A printing press uses 4 plates (C, M,Y,K) to do a metallic color that actually add another plate (PANTONE of your metallic color) and run that through. They charge you for that (setup & stuff) so it can be expensive.

Umm... I know this isn't a printing topic but when people post misleading information its a bit irritating. Metallic inks are not the only inks which need an extra plate. If you were to use varnish of some sort this would also be used as an extra plate, or special colour, or any colours which dont fall into the CMYK range. These colours usually consists of fluorescent inks or shiny inks. Example colours such as gold can not be reproduced by CMYK so you must use a special colour to create a gold ink which needs an extra plate which causes more money.
