next!!! you may have the blast worm on your computer... run window update immediately once computer is finished starting up... the aug 2005 malicious software will remove the problem... happened to me a couple of days ago after i reformatted a friends computer... next get HIGHJACKTHIS.exe from merijn at http://www.spywareinfo.com i think thats the url...
might have to google it :D
next!!! if highjackthis.exe doesn't work you will have to find a .dll file to enable msvb***.dll i forget the name...
just remember sp2 is much needed on windows xp...
if nothing is wrong with software it just mabye hardware... power supply may be giving out...
DO NOT OPEN CASE!!! it will infringe upon your warranty!!! just return it for a new or newer computer if your warranty customer proctection program covers it :D

To be fair, it really does sound like a hardware issue. I noticed someone mentioned your hdd, have you tried a different drive just to see what would happen?
Do you have a spare PSU sitting around that you can swap in and see if that helps? I've had the same problem as you a couple different times, both times it was the PSU.
What temps are you running? If you didn't put in an internal speaker or turned off the alarm in your bios, is it possible that you're overheating? Might be time to get out the dremel.
