The contest should mirror the forum but of course be more specific in its intentions. Neversidians could register as a contest holder or as contest participants and the system can store information about past contests, the outcomes, etc. This is useful after alot of time has passed so contest holders can see what the participants are made of and for participants to see what kind of a contest holder they are going to spend their time on. It's also a great way to convince people that they should hold their contests here because one of the big worries is "will I get something I'll like".
I think submissions should be seperated from general posts because I find the "wow that's great" or "I think your design is crap" stuff really clutters a contest. People need a quick way to just get to the submissions. The holder needs an easier way to judge, people need an easier time filling their browsing curiousity, and participants need an easier way to look at the competition.
I think the best way to organize the contest area is to thread each contest by submission with a general chat area so they can ask their questions to the contest holder. So, it'd be something like this:
Contest 1
- Discussion Area
- Submission 1
- Submission 2
- Submission 3
Contest 2
- Discussion Area
- Submission 1
- Submission 2
- Submission 3
Contest 3
- Discussion Area
- Submission 1
- Submission 2
- Submission 3
Within each submission, people can post their comments which viewers would either choose to ignore or read.
With this type of system, you could also add other cool stuff like allow viewers to vote on submissions to help the contest holder see who the other neversidians think should win.
I have to get to work though, so I can't continue my brainstorming
.

vivehostingcom, i think it would work better in this order..
Contest
- Submission 1
- Submission 2
- Submission 3
- Discussion Area
..with the submissions before the discussion area, because more people are going to want to see the submissions than chatting.
also, i think it would be pretty neat if we could have 'contest stats' in our profiles.. IE: # of contests entered/# of contests won .. # of votes for submissions in contests.. etc.

I don't think voting for a submission is wise b/c we want the contest holder to decide who wins. If the contestants vote for the winner, and the contest holder chooses someone else, then bashing and flaming starts, "I think ______(enter name here) got ripped, his design was much better". And so on and so forth.

maybe there could be two types of contests.
1. vote-decided: members vote on their favorite. members entered in the contest may vote, but not for themself.
2. normal: the contest starter decides the winner

yeah, i think the contest holder should be able to decide like arcynic said, maybe he could even select a panel of judges, but that probably doesnt need to be in the system as it would probably be easier to do that externally (email, IM, pm etc)
also i think the contest submission of users should be viewable through their studio, and contests should be placed in a studio category, so that when an entry is submitted it automatically goes in the right studio of the user. (it should still be clearly marked a contest submission though in the studio)
then contests could also be shown by studio sections, so you could go to like the photography studio, and there would be like: new photographs, popular photographs (or whatever else is on there) and at the bottom a link for contest (maye a little box with the newest/most active contests)

having the holder vote alone can also be pretty tuff and cause people to not want to
submit if they never seem to win. 'Teacher's Pet', and all that, no offense.
Submitted item members should be able to vote on whom they think is best out of the
bunch. an email sent in with item name they like & member name would
keep that part secret. the holder can tally up the votes and post the winner. if a tie
ensues then the holder can either choose from there or have a re-vote between the
tie items or select 1 member who didnt vote for the tie items to be the tie breaker.
good ideas so far.
And a big WELCOME to the team Kickboy.

Good ideas so far. Keep them coming.
I like Arcynic's idea, but not sure how I would go about implimenting it. I'll run it by Locke and see if we can use that idea somehow.
As for the posititioning of the 'Discussion Area', that's a template thing. We'll decide how that's going to be organized later. Most likely it'll be placed after the submissions like Arcynic said, but that's still open to debate at the momment.

expanding on Arcynic, vierstein, and onelife's ideas
The holder could select the contest's decision type
Decision Types:
1. holder picks winners
2. holder selects judges who vote for winner (holder breaks tie)
3. participants vote, cannot pick themselves, (if tie, revote for top entries)(if still tied, holder breaks)
4. public vote (if tie, revote held for top entries)(if still tied, holder breaks)
5. maybe a combination of any of those?

or better yet, the discussion area could be hid by default, and then those users who want to read through/contribute to the discussion could click a button/link to display it. basically re-use the code used to hide the sidebar.
i know this isn't a major issue, sorry to keep bringing it up, but i figure i'd get my ideas out there before i forget.
