Burning .avi for living room entertainment

Hey all:

I've only had my DVD burner for a few days now, and tonight some friends want to get together and watch American History X.

Hopefully I can (with some help) figure out how to do this. I've read a little, and from what I've gathered, I need to convert the .avi to mpeg1 or mpeg2? I have seen a few programs on download.com

After this, what method do i use to burn the movie to a DVD?

I've seen alot of different programs at methods on VideoHelp.com; could someone recommend a program or something to get me started?

Thanks a ton!

Edit: Freeware please!

most dvd burners come with software that can do it straight out of the box
the most common one is nerovision express, which is pretty simple to use and does it all for you.

most other dvd burning programs can also burn straight from avi to dvd.
you should be able to find one on download.com
you probably wont need a seperate conversion programme.

I just got a dvd burner yesterday, so I know how you feel! But I do have a lot of experience with VCD's before that.

What Aidan linked to is the best site for all your dvd backup, along with dvdrhelp.com which is a bit more newbie friendly.

I would specifically look at:

http://www.doom9.org/mpg/tmpg-dvdencoding.htm - To encode the contents into a new file, smaller so it fits on dvd-r

http://www.doom9.org/mpg/tmpg-dvdauthor.htm - To place the encoded file onto your dvd-r

Post here if you need more detailed help with something.
