Smoothing out an image

I have an image that i need smoothing out, i've tried drawing round it with the freehand tool but mostly parts of it come out edgey and uneven.

The image is the logo of the school i work for which is going to be used in a presentation in the main entrance and no the website, and on documents so it can't look deformed the one we are using now is fine but very bad when enlarging or using it on powerpoint or on a website.

in photoshops what are the easiet ways to remove the jagged edges and make the image nice and smooth

Undoubtedly, your best bet is to redraw it as a vector, using the pen tool, in PS, or preferably in a vector program such as Illustrator or Xara X. It's a fairly simple logo, so it should be pretty easy to replicate it.

Or you can just paint over it. If you dont plan on enlarging it greatly to a print size then you can just paint over it.

yeah, even a quick (5 minutes) can get it this smooth using the pen tool; might be good enough for your uses, might not -- you can always clean it up more with a vector program if you need it.
