No, although it generally implies death, drowning only means that liduid has entered the lungs, preventing the victim from breathing. If you get water into your lungs, but get it out before you asphyxiate, you have drowned, but didnt die.

I don't know what the deal is with eating and swimming. Our team has licorice and we eat it in between events, I don't seem to get cramps or die when I get in the water.
