I was a little confused by what he said as well. Either he is saving up money for a mac mini (for himself) or he is saving up to get one for his mom.

Linux is for people who feel like having a stable, secure, and cheap environment. Just about anything is free for linux/bsd. People sometimes stay away from it because it's complex and takes more work and often people go on the computer to relax and don't feel like going through something complex. My default OS is Windows now but I remember installing mandrake linux years back when it was in the 8.x releases and I was using it at one time because windows had messed up and failed on me. I was actually quite satisfied until I got ot windows only apps and some other things. Yes, I can use wine but wine was giving me some trouble and would only run a couple of apps. Anyway, I see windows being superior in terms of simplicity over Linux/BSD. Although, Mac OS X is superior to windows with simplicity. After the Macintel announcement, people think that it may someday be possible (with or without hacks) to run Mac OS X on a regular PC box and if that does come true, I think it will be my OS of choice.

If mac osx becomes availble via pc then I'm willing to give it a try. I heard it's very user friendly from a mate of mine. The macs are too damn expensive or else i guess i wont mind having one. |The thing is linux is more command prompt based than windows. Because of this it makes it harder to use but we mustn't forget that people have devoted their time trying to make configuration tools. On the other hand thats what gives linux its powerful nature. Its a shame not all companies develop for linux. I hope to see more companies devoted to linux instead of windows.

To be fair on ms though windows xp/2000 they seem to be much more stable then previous versions of windows. It doesn't crash on me much but i think they still get lots to learn.

I've run Gentoo and FreeBSD, and I do like FreeBSD better. The thing is, someone said it's much more command line based. Windows is not based by user-inputted command line at all. And Linux/the BSD's don't have to be command line based, it's all choice. In fact, after you've set up a DE on a box, you can often avoid a lot of command line you would have to chop through on a CLI box.

Windows is good for applications. Most applications come with .exe and mac extensions, and don't have .tar.bz2 and .tar.gz files on them.

Linux is nowhere near a complete desktop platform yet, yes it offers many benefits in terms of security and customisation but as a functional 'average user' setup linux is seriously lacking.

You cannot wrap linux into one little package and say that it isn't functional for an average user.

There are hundreds of linux distributions. Some are better than others. Some are more user friendly, some are more stable, some are faster, some are easier to customize, etc...

And this is why linux is so great. You can choose what you want. There isn't just one product. There are hundreds of OS's with multiple graphical interfaces that you can completely customize. There are thousands of free programs.

So just because you tried Gentoo for a week and found it hard, don't throw linux out the window. I recently switched over to Kubuntu after over 2 years running Mandrake. It is 100 times better than mandrake. I've only had to comile a few programs from source. It is EASY. It is PERFECT for me. I can do everything I want, how I want to, without any problems.

To sum it up, you get out what you put into linux. You can tweak it to work exactly how you want--you can't do that to Windows. It's your decision whether this is "user friendly" or not. Last, its different. People grow up on windows, so you have to learn a few things when you switch to Linux. If you put in the time to learn it, you will benefit.

That said, Linux can't run games. Unfortunatly, it hasn't worked out that part of the market yet. Plus other Windows programs, even though Crossover and Wine have almost fixed that.
