One thing to think about if you're coming to America from somewhere in Europe (actually anywhere right now) -- the dollar is incredibly weak against foreign currency, therefore, if you have any sort of savings where you are, they'll be worth more.

Putting yourself through school all depends on where you're going -- many areas in the center of America (not the coasts, basically) are crazy cheap to live, whereas areas that either A) have good weather all year long, or B) have more than 500,000 people, or C) are in Colorado will typically be from two to three times as expensive for a slightly lower standard of living.

Cars are a necessity in most parts of the country, sadly. America has a terrible case of sprawl-itis. The use of space is stupidly wasteful, typically. Therefore, if the place you're thinking of moving doesn't have a public transit system, you'll probably need a car (or at least a vespa)...and oddly, if the city does have a good transit system, you probably won't want a car.

Move to Phoenix. Virtually no tax on food.

Heh, I used to live in La Jolla, but I never knew the average house cost $1,708,333! Shocked

I used to live in Hollywood, then Tom Cruise kicked me off his front lawn. Now I have to live in Massachusetts. It's not bad here, then again I don't do taxes. Oh, and seahawks_fan, I doubt that "virtually no tax on food" is a good incentive to move somewhere. Your parents probably have a large income tax or something to balance it out.

America is cheaper depending on what country you live. I guess if you're in the UK paying $6 US cash for a gallon of gas, I guess it's cheaper to live here than there, but where my parents come from, I can be considered rich with the money I make a month where I'm hardly average here in NY Wink.

You should also consider Canada as a place to live.

The major cities to consider are Toronto (East), Ottawa (East) and Vancouver (West).

It really depends.

Here in Connecticut, the mortgage on my house is $1,600 a month, and you'd be lucky to find a house under $500,000 for sale. But, in the next town over, houses average $125,000.

My sister moved to California 6 months ago, and the apartment she lives in with her boyfriend and son is $1,200 a month. Like everyone is saying, it really depends on where you are moving.

Exactly. Major cities are realtively expensive. The further to the outskirts you go the cheaper it gets Smile
