GD - PNG transparency

I have a trasparent png that I made that I want to use to make a new image with. I want to change the transparent parts of the png that i've already made to a different color. How would i go about doing this?

make a color picture, and place the transparent png on top it, the transparent will take the color of the normal picture :DD

gd does a crappy job of this just so you know, the corners of stuff never seem to get very transparent. Instead the color that you chose to make transparent kind of leaks onto surrounding stuff.
