It isn't even an MMO - there is no reason it should have a monthly fee in the first place. How isn't it a MMO? ___________________ Cell phone geek. A lot of my friends are getting it so I suppose I will too. Maybe this week or next week. Monthly fee is a plus for me because I'm not going to pay $10-15 a month for some game when I could get pretty good web hosting or newsgroups for the same amount. That is just stupid. I mean... you bought the game, what else do they want? How about you make the game then stfu? kthx ___________________
"Guild Wars has some similarities to existing MMORPGs, but it also has some key differences. Like existing MMOs, Guild Wars is played entirely online in a secure hosted environment. Thousands of players inhabit the same virtual world. Players can meet new friends in gathering places like towns and outposts where they form parties and go questing with them. Unlike many MMOs, when players form a party and embark upon a quest in Guild Wars, they get their own private copy of the area where the quest takes place. This design eliminates some of the frustrating gameplay elements commonly associated with MMOs, such as spawn camping, kill stealing, and lines to complete a quest. Guild Wars takes place in a large virtual world made up of many different zones, and players can walk from one end of the world to the other. In Guild Wars much of the tedium of traveling through the world has been eliminated. Players can instantly return to any safe area (town or outpost) that they have previously visited just by clicking on it in the world overview map. Rather than labeling Guild Wars an MMORPG, we prefer to call it a CORPG (Competitive Online Role-Playing Game). Guild Wars was designed from the ground up to create the best possible competitive role-playing experience. Success in Guild Wars is always the result of player skill, not time spent playing or the size of one's guild. As characters progress, they acquire a diverse set of skills and items, enabling them to use new strategies in combat. Players can do battle in open arenas or compete in guild-vs-guild warfare or the international tournament. Engaging in combat is always the player's choice, however; there is no player-killing in cooperative areas of the world. Finally, unlike existing MMOs, all characters in Guild Wars inhabit the same virtual world -- they are not divided onto different servers or shards -- so players can always team up with or compete against any other player in the world." from: http://www.guildwars.com/faq/default.html They have never claimed to be an MMO, and it most certainly isn't. While you do inhabit central areas like towns, whenever you go and do something like a quest you get a private copy. This is the reason they don't need fees, because there aren't hundreds of players in a single zone. Once you leave the town it is just like you are playing Neverwinter Nights with some friends on a 6 man server. Sounds like a fun game but Im not sure I will be investing in it, dont they bore you after a few hours? It is likely that this game, if you're interested in it, would last you quite a long time. Especially since they promise to add as much content as the original game every 6 to 9 months. (in the form of an expansion pack that they call "A new chapter") My only gripe with this game is the loot system. One of the main reasons I like role playing games so much is the fact that I can really see improvement in my character as I play the game. I get better armor, better weapons, just better items in general. In guild wars, you do get better armor and weapons, but there are no hugely significant improvements. The game is very mucnh skill based, so weapons and armor dont play a very big role in how well your character does on the battlefield, which is sort of cool, but at the same time, I want my high level character's abilities to be vastly superior to a low level character - its sort of the whole point of a rpg, to me anyway. ___________________ I haven't yet really gotten into any MMORPGs and this one seems pretty good. I've barely played so I'm almost to lvl 3, but I'm having fun so far. It looks like a good portion of this summer will be spent with this game. ___________________
