Water Ripple on Mouseover

I have a problem that I'm trying to figure out. I'm working on a plumbing showroom website and the owner's would like to have a water ripple effect on the flash slideshow that I'm doing when the user mouses over. An example is: http://www.aquaglass.com/productmenu.cfm when you highlight over "Aquaglass."

I have some thoughts as to how to do this. I think that Photoshop and some animation that layers over it will work in flash but I'm not certain that that be the best way to go about the problem. I remember a long time ago that there was a way that you could perform image manipulation in ActionScript possibly but forgot that. I even forgot if thats the way it worked.

I've searched high and low on the net. Please help!

It'd be wonderful if you could do something like that, but the example you pointed out is java not flash.. Maybe (maybe) the next version of the Flash player will be capable of supporting something like that.. Unfortunately, it's just a pipe dream at the moment. Unless, of course, you know some java...

I think you might be able to create an inferior ripple effect in Flash by using circles that spread from your mouse when you move it on a mask layer or make the circles semitransparent or sumthing like that. I, unfortunately, forget how to do that. I know there was a tutorial on that subject on the old tutorialforums site...but that's really no help. It would not be the same exact effect as the aqua glass one, but it would get the job done. I'm sorry i can't give you much more help than that...

You could easily create a cartoonish ripple effect, but not something THAT realistic.

There's actually a tutorial here i wrote for a ripple effect. If you could be bothered and if search worked you could probably find it in here!

Unfortunately, the links in the tutorial thread are a bit outdated.

that one's pretty good, not quite the same, but looks very realistic..

looks like I was almost dead on about Flash 8.. check out this example:
http://www.kneib.biz/f8files/water_with_f8.html

If'n anyone's interested, these are the tests that I've been doing with Flash 8:

http://www.onebyonedesign.com/flash/f8/test1/
http://www.onebyonedesign.com/flash/f8/test2/
http://www.onebyonedesign.com/flash/f8/test3/

Lovin' it!

A word of caution - you will need to have the new flash 8 player installed to view any of the links I just posted..
