No it's not.. CentOS is. Fedora is the retarded community attempt at RHE and fails, CentOS is the 'real deal' of RHE, unlike the buggy, and shotty Fedora. Although I'd prefer he'd use Fedora or CentOS as opposed to what some morons use.. like Gentoo.

Locke, I know you are a FreeBSD guy, but which distro of linux do you prefer if you had to choose? Oh yeah, one of the NS developers (Noel) uses Gentoo. I just see some irony in that.

That doesn't mean he's not an idiot, and he prefers FreeBSD. He even admits that Gentoo has ridiculous problems. Gentoo is great for people who get joy in fixing things repeatedly.. and the stupid Emerge function. Not to mention most of the package manager admins are like 12 years old.

I would, have, and recommend CentOS. Then when you finally get your balls to hang, join the real world of BSD.

2 years ago Gentoo was great and about 5 times faster than your Redhat on my Laptop so please stfu. I would go with ubuntu right now. Yes, call me fanboy, but I guess it is a nice approach and works nice.
Of course if you need to be 1337 and need to use an unknown distribution because you are cool, than ask Locke. He seems to know...

Good job telling the admin to stfu.
Gentoo is to bloated. I think most things now based on the Linux kernel are to bloated because of the RPMs. Using a Unix based distro (NetBSD, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Darwin, etc.) is often times better because it's not as bloated and literally has the bare essentials.

CentOS is unknown? Oh.. well, I better send that memo over to most of the world class datacenters and providers who are using it as an alternative to RHE, damn, thanks for that info!

Also, I 'do' happen to know, because I have used crap OSes like Gentoo and Fedora. I've used just about every type of 'mainstream' *nix or BSD OS you can think of. I've used Slackware, Mandrake, SuSe, Fedora, Gentoo, and so forth.

So maybe it's not the fact I'm cool, but maybe it's the fact that I've worked with the others, and FreeBSD works best in what I do, which is bringing Neverside about with top performance on the OS end. So maybe 'you' should STFU, and take notes on who really works outside of the 'omg, Gentoo is so awesome'.

FreeBSD is also used by 'tons' of large providers, so I think it's just the fact that you're too new to the whole thing to really engage in the depth of how many different OS applications there are. Or perhaps you're just too attached to using crap, to use the real thing, I dunno, figure it out. I've run and managed tons of webservers, so I prefer FreeBSD over crap OSes like Gentoo. I still don't recommend FreeBSD, even FreeBSD5 for a desktop enviroment, I recommend CentOS because it performs.

Anyways Getox, if you want to use a real OS, and not a waste of time install of Gentoo, then get CentOS: http://www.centos.org/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=13

Those are all the download mirrors.

and just incase most of their file trees are too hard to navigate.. here is one I've used:

http://mirror.trouble-free.net/centos/4.0/isos/i386/
