In my humble opinion Red Hat Networks produces some of the most highly supported softwares in the world. Many versions of linux are great however, it simply depends on what you want to do with it. For instance, if you wanted to have a version of Linux that you wanted to take with you on bootable CDROM or "Thumb Drive" I would suggest Slax (http://slax.linux-live.org/). If you are running a Macintosh (PPC) based machine then I would suggest Yellow Dog (http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/). If you are a pc user and looking for the all inclusive package, then I would go with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. While you have to pay ($179) for this version you would get excellent support and patches on demand. Now I didn't forget that you requested "and free?". Many projects are derrived from RHEL (red hat enterprise linux), such as the wonderful CentOS (http://www.centos.org/). CentOS IS RHEL! The only difference is some copy (ie. text) and images have been changed as to not en fringe on © laws. CentOS is able to be RHEL exactly because Red Hat is Open Source and anyone can freely change and distribute changes. CentOS is perfectly legal and ISO images are available for download from their website. Give it a Shot! I apologize for not delving into the other areas of Linux but there is WAY to much and your question was based on which OS. Let me know if you have any more questions. Hope That Helps, Last edited by jchiesa, April 6th, 2005 07:49 AM (Edited 2 times) I think that Debian, Slackware and Fedora are the better releases of Linux. RedHat was good until they stopped developing it anymore. i have always used Fedora (well RH9 before fedora) and i am very happy with it. I am always hearing about how cool Gentoo is, but frankly i'm scared of it. (never got into the whole "compile it yourslef" stuffs) ___________________
My friend had good luck with Mrandrake when he was using that for a while, but I don't have much personal experience with it. You could always check it out, though. Gentoo is pretty good, but can be a ***** and a half to install on some systems, if your a little new to Linux you should probably stay away from Gentoo for a bit. Other than that it's great. RH9 is really good, easy to install and use. However, some of the common Linux commands don't quite work the same. So if you are using a general Linux tutorial for something and it doesn't quite work, you have to find RH9 specific tutorials. Little annoying. I've never had any experience with Fedora, but I havn't heard the greatest things about it. It's sapose to be "ok". No personal experience with Debian really (a little, but not much), but I've heard nothing but great things about it. Sapose to be a really good OS in general. If you want to go the Unix direction, which is very similar to Linux, I strongly reccommend FreeBSD. It is an awesome OS, from top to bottom. Really good. FreeBSD is actually what Neverside runs on, if I'm not mistaken. ___________________ I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.
