Router And Firewall

Hey,

I currently have a router and I was wandering because my router has a built in Firewall do I need my current firewall Zone Alarm still running on my system?

THanks

I think its a good idea to run both as long you are runing only one firewall on your computer. So you have a hardware firewall (in the router) and a software firewall on your comp(Zone Alarm).

I think anyways, someone clarify this?

i am currently only running a hardware firewall but it wont do any harm to run a properly configured software firewall along side it... just two things to get through instead of one, but hardware firewalls are generally better than software firewalls i believe..

that is correct cos they are harder to hack into cos software can be overloaded with a dos attack

a software firewall has the advantage of running at a higher level. So some programs can be allowed internet access and others denied it. A hardware firewall will simply allow/deny based on the ports/addresses being contacted.

Both have there advantages/disadvantages. The only time it can be bad running 2 is if u are having a problem - trying to figure what is getting blocked or allowed can be more troublesome with 2 firewalls.

The hole idea of secrurity is to layer it. The more layers the better your chances of staying online. Having a hardware firewall is a great idea and does stop alot of the hackers but it will never replace a proper firewall like Norton (or zone alarm) because these programs monitor all incoming ports, which is how hackers usually get ahold of your machine. When you dont have a software firewall these ports are left open and a hacker can usually just walk in on you.

As for DOS attacks..... ? i highly doubt anyone would orginize a DOS attack on a home computer, they are almost always directed for a larger target I.E a server that will get the hackers (or script kiddies) point across, its a waste of time to DOS/DDOS a home computer.

I would go for both if i were you.

Well,

In some instances ZA can conflict with hardware firewalls, I would suggest just using the hardware firewall, but them are just my opinions.
