The Bad
- Lots of dead air
- Lots of 'nagging' on Locke's part to get other people to talk
- 'Bawls'
- Too many weird distracted remarks from Locke while reading the IRC chat that doesn't make sense if you weren't there
- No ones prepared, and even a simple question like 'where did your name come from' takes 5 mins
The Good
- Despite his lack of experience Locke trudges on
- Taking questions from users who are in the IRC chat
- 'Bawls'
- Getting users involved
The show is pretty bad right now. Wait. Breath. Listen. Its just as useless to hate this show for the sake of hating it as it is to love this show for the sake of loving it. I listened to the first show (mp3) with the reviews in mind ('Awesome' 'Great') and I just have to say you people were either lying or on crack. Yes i know this isn't a professional show but that doesn't make it any better. It had a lot of problems.
However, it has a lot of potential. Locke has issues getting his guest to really speak but i bet if you tried to be a host you wouldn't get much more out as those guests. Locke is very very good as just sort of keeping the flow. (He keeps talking, which is harder then you think) There is a lot of dead air, but I think he can improve upon that. The 2nd show was A LOT better, and i was invovled in the IRC chat so the side-remarks made a lot more sense.
It looks like nothing that time and practice won't overall fix.
Suggestions
1. Prep Special Guest/Guests - Not script it, but just give them an idea what you want from them before the show. This way they can consider their position and give you better answers. If you are going to ask the same question to each guest that 'calls' in, let them know 'This is neverside and we are asking our users what their favorite feature will be'.
2. Screening - Well this is more on the IRC end. You get distracted by trying to read things and process them in you head while still talking aloud. Ha I can't barely think and talk at the same time so I applaud you for how well you handle it, but get one of your special guests to keep track of questions in the actual chat, and have a process (like PM you on IRC) for them to signal that they want to talk about something.
3. Radio Page - Just a simple page that links to all relevant information about this radio show. I saw a few people who missed the show because they didn't know about it at such short notice. If they had one page/thread to bookmark to check out the latest news, it might help them out. Later once you know what you want you can post info on how other users/communities can get involved in the show.
4. Links - If you post a link in IRC keep log and report them in a 'related links' thread. You were on the right track with the thread about dave's setup but you need something that has it all in one post. Not what people feel like replying to and reposting.
