Shiftronic ><

hi guy.

i just got my G2 (drivers license in ontario) and im finally driving alone -__- and then one day, while driving around in my dad's TL, i found a section on the transmission that branched off from the D5, so i shifted into that and then found out i could change gears on my own o.O;;

so yeah i found out that was called the shiftronic or whatever, and it kicks *** cuz i have no clue how to drive manual, and shiftronic makes it feel so easy lol

anyway i have a question for anyone that drives manual out there. i have no clue how to use the clutch pedal, and my car doesnt have a clutch anyway, so it doesnt matter, but what i wanna know is, if you are driving on the streets, what should you keep your revs at? cuz usually when i set it on auto is at like 2k-3k, but when i screw around with the shiftronic im running at like 6k, first gear, going at 60 =__=;;

yeah im a newb. and i know this question sounds stupid, but can someone give me some tips on that?

thnx in advance~

My dad's car has that shiftronic thing. It's pretty gnarly. You don't even have to let off the gas to shift. =P

Anyways, my dad told me that the best performance is right under 2,000.

6,000?

That would be pretty close to redline (on the tacho, the red area) and you try to stay away from there.

I change around 3,000 and keep it around 2,000 just cruising

Hmm depends where the powerband for your engine begins and ends. If you shift to early you're going to kill your acceleration and too late you kill your gas milage.

In most cars 2500-3000 is where you should shift in lower gears. Your second to last gear maybe a little higher.

I want to punch everyone in this thread in the face.

If you dont know anything, dont play with it.

eventually you'll do something stupid, like drop it from 5th to 1st at 6k, or into neutral or something.

That's amazing! I love it when people say these things.

First off, automatic/shiftronic/etc is for pussies, real men use a clutch.

Second, the ideal powerband differs from car to car and situation to situation. It's not something you can pinpoint exactly, you just got to feel it.

Most people will just shift up when it feels right by listening to the engine etc, typically that might be at 2k-3k rpm. If you like driving as if your *** is on fire, change up at the red line Grin

Anyhoo, over here if you take your test in an automatic you can only drive automatic. Most people learn to drive manual because it's more popular and then you can drive manual or automatic.

It's also because manual cars are cheaper... Who wants to pay an extra £1000 just to be lazy?

shiftronic will not let you redline and you can only shift one gear at a time. It's not a manual and it won't let you kill the engine it'll upshift autmatically regardless.

Scryypy most american cars some wiht auto standard so if you're buying used it's sometimes hard to find. Also new technologies like DSG and SMG are superior to a manual even when driven by a professional. They can shift about as fast as you can blink.
