Try to follow along with me here if you can I am goign to reference the first one because the second version you are farther from the path than you should be and the first was more in the right direction...
you have that cross-section with the header image and the left side...
What you did at the top was nice, the purple going to a very dark just before the header image overlaps. Do the same thing in reverse on the bottom of the header image, so it looks like the header image is really going over the left side... Basically pick a darker purple but keep the softer pastelly shade, just a bit darker and basically how you have the gradient just before the top of the header image, do the same thing in reverse on the bottom, making the whole left side the darker color and if you want a border choose a shade between the background color and the darker pruple with a bit of opacity so it doesn't shout "I'm a border"
Then use the same color and border styling for the content header rather than just a solid background everywhere with a loud border forcing people to look in an area with no real need for that much focus.
This should give the illusion of something similar to magazine placement of image and content but more in the style of when they are actually putting the cutouts on the page before it goes to print. if you tweak it just right it's a nice style for web...
Move the modualo 1.0 get it now to where the top horizontal lniks are and choose an itc font if possible for more elegance and flow and move those links between the header image and content header. then use the same style that i suggested for the content header and make a footer in the same exact width and spacing but shorter in height with a nice clean copyright notice and maybe privacy terms and whatnot...
This way your content will be focused on without having to make any kind of graphical or visual direction to the content directly. It will be framed in a way by everything around it making it visually soft and appealin without being tedious and still drawing the focus to the point of the site... With the horizonatl links closer to the content you will keep visitors in the area they should be in without drawing them farther away then they need to be...
I would also suggest doing one of three or whatever for the side nav category text: bottom-border or maybe just a - after the word, or a faux bullet before it, just to make it absolutely clear and clean without it being dumped on the page like any list with a bold face on its topic...
Ok those are my opinions/suggestions.
you asked for more so I think that should qualify...
Nice job so far...
