Am i right i thought they are two different technologies used in networking BNC(Thick-net/Thin-net) and twisted pair (CAT 5/6) are both usable for ethernet(CSMA/CD) networks. 10 Base 2 is Thin net - the thinner coax cable In teh above examples the 10 is the speed so 10 Mbit although Twisted pair can now go a lot higher than this Base is for Baseband, the alternative being broadband. 2 is the range of 200 feet, 5 is 500 ft which was how far they could go without a repeater. The T is just for twisted pair. Hope that helps a little ___________________ Why do we have to learn English? I speaks da ***** so why dont people use the BNC interface anymore. All the network I've seen have been CAT5/6. My friend recommended me to use the cat5 instead of the bnc why Things improve wih better technology. ___________________ AEN DIRECT
Cat5 is easier to get hold of, you can buy it in rolls and make your own or walk into many stores and pick up a standard length. Cat5 is also able to go to higher speeds. 10Mb may sound fast compared to your iternet connection but if you want to copy a large file from one machine to another you will be much better off with 100Mb or even gigabit Equipment is also a lot more common for Twisted pair networks, you can go pick up switches, hubs, routers and other things and they will all have RJ45 connections. You will be very lucky to find a BNC one. We do have some really old hubs at work that have RJ45 connections on them and one BNC. This was designed to be used as the link between multiple devices.
