Unless microsoft puts firefox with the windows bundle, it wont happen. Average users dont know what firefox is. Still havent tried the new FF, but unless they fixed up the website compatibilty it wont take over, IE works extremely better. Web designers design sites for IE not FF. Until that shifts, lots of people will not be switching.

The designer problem can easily be solved if I am given their addresses and a shotgun.

Firefox doesn't have any problems with website compatibility, when the designers / coders made them they had to make them to IE standards which is not up to par with the proper web standards (Sorry Don't know the technical name)

And considering Firefox blocks just about anything I don't, want no more automatic downloads or things trying to install themselves, I'm happily glad that the firefox's user base is increasing and growing the rate it is.

Hmm and the popup blocker inbuilt into Firefox, I have to use the google toolbar to use a popup blocker on IE, I know that they've released a new version of IE in SP2 which has a inbuilt popup blocker, You have to have SP2 to download or have the new version of IE big mistake there for microsoft.

I read somewhere that IE's proportion of the Browser market last month was 85% so it is going down bit by bit..

simple truth:

IE is shipped with windows, the average user could care less about web standards

my only problem with ff is the d/l manager, i cant stand it. If i d/l something i go to ie, i can use d/l accelerator plus then.

I'm not saying ff is worse, the opposite is true. But as long as IE and IE only is shipped with windows I dont see a majority shift towards FF.

Maybe, but I'm sure a lot of people are concerned with security.

Well, of course, all they know is IE. Some even know IE as _the_ internet. This is one problem that needs to be solved. People need to be informed that there are alternatives. And, not just Firefox, either. There's also Opera, and many other browsers available.

I'm not sure what you're talking about here. Firefox displays (X)HTML and CSS correctly and to standard, for the most part. IE has far more flaws (i.e., http://positioniseverything.net/explorer.html).

Why do you make such large assumptions? Not all web designers design solely for IE, well code for IE, rather.. There are many people who do follow web standards and code to standard, testing in a standard compliant browser, like Firefox. Of course, most people do make their sites work in IE as well. If it's a large site on any scale, then they pretty much have to work in IE. It's not about coding for one browser, and only one browser. It's about coding for all browsers and all user agents. This can be easily attained with web standards, the problem is that IE fails to recognize many.

IE shipping with windows being the reason FF won't take a mass majority of users out there is just plain stupid. We're not talking about the next 3 years here. We're talking about in a decade or so. By then the majority of people who are too out of it to know what FF is will either be dead or clued in. I have an older sister who knew absolutely nothing computer related and now she's a firefox user. Besides, I think the majority of people purchasing computers that would be shipped with windows are kids, and kids these days are growing up doing stuff that I didn't get into til 5 years later. These forums are a testament to that. It's all about the marketing. I'm sure if you asked anyone who's not a big computer user what Google is, they'll have an idea what it's about. Wink
