Switching modes for a psd file

for a psd file, will turning a RGB image to greyscale (or any other different kind of modes) then back to RGB, without merging the layers, lower the quality of the picture? thanks in advance.

You shouldnt see any change in quality really. A better method for converting to B&W is by using the Channel Mixer in Monochrome mode. It will give you more control over the tones.
