Lightwave Subdivision Settings

So, I'm messin' with 3D stuff now. Fun. I'm looking at lots of tutorials, actually being able to make things, all that fun stuff. Here's a problem I can't seem to fix, though.

In Lightwave, when you hit tab, it subdivides everything and makes it smoother... How can I adjust the settings, though? For example, in C4D's hyperNURBS, you can change how much you want it to subdivide (I made the mistake of making it a tad too high... 6 = not good. That's a different story, though). This allows you to make things more or less smooth. How can I change this in Lightwave?

In Layout, select the object and press 'p' to brin up the object properties.

You want to change:-
Display Subpatch Level : This is the subdivide in layout as u view it
Render Subpatch Level : This is the subdivide when rendered

Haha, thanks. I was looking within the modeler all this time. I guess the only option, then, is within layout?

to the best of my knowledge yes, pressing tab in modeller just turns subdivide on or off. Its not until its in layount that you have control.

Depending on what u r doing though surface properties will help make the surface look smooother.

More questions! I won't make a new topic, though... Anyway, in C4D, you can do that cool explosion thing (among other effects) which takes breaks the object up into a bunch of polygons and asplodes 'em. I'm not looking into Lightwave at the moment, but I haven't noticed anything like that in it... Am I just overlooking something?

Also, in Lightwave, I made a "ball" (ie 2D circle), and then extruded it into a cylinder. I has some weird problems with that at first, but I got it. After I got a working cylinder, I beveled it into a cup. When I hit tab, though, it takes my edgeds and fscks them, hard. It's just messed up; each polygon on the part of the cup that you would hold has this oval-ish thing on it. Why?

Sorry if it's hard to understand... I don't feel like typing a thousand words for the picture.

You can set the sub patch level in modeler by hitting the "o" key and adjust the patch level.

As far as blowing things up, go over to www.flay.com and search the plugin data base there. There is a really nice plugin called C4 (free) - there are a few others too.

To make your cup, use the disc tool and bevel tool, every time you want to make a new bevel, turn it on and off. (bevel poly, click the button to turn it off, then back on, bevel again.. rinse-repeat) sub patch when done.

If your using v. [8] dont forget you have the rounder plug in too. That will help "rounding" the edges

Hmm... Thanks. I'll investigate flay and rounder later; I'm at school right now, and they don't have lightwave (despite having Photoshop 7, Flash MX 2004, and Dreamweaver MX 2004... I remember why I love this school now).

Anyway, thanks. I'll try rounding instead of subdivision and see how it turns out.
