Question about RAM

I currently have 384mb of RAM ( a 128 chip and a 256 chip ). My motherboard only has 2 slots, so now that I want to upgrade I'm going to have to replace the 128 chip. I am considering replacing it with a 512 chip, and then later getting another 512 chip in place of my 256.

My problem is that I'm more of a software guy, than a hardware guy, and I don't know what RAM I need to get.

DDR 512ECC 266MHZ PC2100 ?

DDR 512ECC 400MHZ PC3200 REG. ?

DDR 512MB 333MHZ PC2700 ?

...tons more

I don't really know what any of that means, from what I remember, DDR is the best type of RAM ?

I was wondering what type of RAM I should get, based on that my system specs are as follows:

Athlon Thunderbird 1ghz processor
384mb RAM
40gb hard drive
ASUS motherboard ( don't remember the model # )

Go into your device manager and see what motherboard you have.
Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware (Tab) > Device Manager

Then go to google and figure what ram is compatible with your motherboard.

you can also go to the website of a major computer retailer or the company that manufacturs your box. They usually have a simple form where you pick your machine from different specs and then it will tell you what kind of ram you need.
