Illustrations Based On Photos

Hi!
How can I create illustrations based on photos? (like this: http://stormchild.net/images/scarlett_johansson.jpg)
I'm using Adobe Illustrator...
I found many tutorials in this forum but I did not find a complete guide for this.

Here is a great tutorial but I don't understand the part with the mesh-tool and where I have to add the mesh points... ::

Its really all about making simple shapes on different layers. As for the gradient mesh tool, it takes a lot of practice and fooling around to see exactly how to control the gradients.
